Alright, here’s the deal.
You know how when you’re on Sanibel, you tell yourself you’re just going to walk the beach for five minutes… and then an hour later you’re hunched over like a professional shell detective with pockets full of treasures? Yeah. That’s this game.
Sanibel: The Board Game, designed by Elizabeth Hargrave, is basically shelling—minus the sunburn, sand in places it doesn’t belong, and someone yelling “LOOK AT THIS ONE!” every three seconds (okay, maybe still that part).
You move your little player guy down the beach, pick up shells, and then try to convince yourself you’re being strategic and not just emotionally attached to a specific shell tile. You arrange them carefully, because apparently stacking shells randomly like I do in real life does not earn points.
There’s strategy involved—real strategy. Like deciding whether you should grab that shell now or risk it for a better one later. It’s surprisingly intense for something so relaxing. Competitive, but in a “we’re all still friends after this” kind of way.
Best part? You don’t need to be a hardcore board gamer. If you can count, plan ahead just a little, and appreciate a good-looking game, you’re in. Kids get it. Adults get into it. And somehow I still lose even though I “definitely had the best shells.”
It’s Sanibel vibes in a box. No tide chart required.
